Research description and overview -- Literature review and alternative solutions -- Laterally restrained section limit states -- Laterally unsupported limit states -- Composite header strength evaluation -- Economical cost-benefit analysis -- A: Laterally supported non-composite design table -- B: Laterally supported composite design table -- C: Laterally unsupported design table -- D: Finite element analysis input -- E: Torsional brasing sample calculation.
A composite wood and steel header is evaluated and its limit states determined. Laterally supported conditions such as where the beam is continually braced by a floor or roof diaphragm and laterally unsupported conditions such as where a beam is not braced are considered. Full steel yielding, shear yielding, wood tensile and compressive, fastener, local buckling, lateral-torsional buckling, and bearing failures are considered. Code provisions are applied and the controlling limit state derived. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is conducted to determine the effect of torsional bracing on steel lateral-torsional buckling. An overview of the features and economic benefits of competing products are evaluated. Resulting calculations and example design tables are provided.
