Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if the amount of heparin given as a loading dose, prior to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), correlated to the transfusion of blood products following CPB. Methods: The objective was accomplished by performing a retrospective review of 1944 primary CABG-only patients who had surgery at Aurora St. Luke's Hospital (Milwaukee, WI) from 2004 to 2007. Conclusions: Findings from this study were not significant and indicate that the pre-CPB heparin loading dose does not affect the transfusion of blood products following CPB.
