Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center (SLMC) is currently not recognized as a Center of Excellence by the governing body of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). In analyzing the criteria that needs to be met in order to apply for the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization's (ELSO) prestigious award, it was noted that one of the shortcomings was that the facility lacked a training program for those managing the circuit and at the bedside of the ECMO patient. Therefore, the goal of this project was to develop assessment tools and a training manual to aid in the onboarding process for a newly hired perfusionist. These tools can also be utilized as competency assessments and review for established perfusionists as well as by students completing their clinical rotation at this facility.
The assessment and training program was primarily developed utilizing ELSO's guidelines for educating ECMO specialists and a clinical assessment framework known as "Miller's Pyramid". This pyramid features four tiers to assess that an individual "knows", "knows how", "shows how", and "does" the duties to successfully perform their job. To align with this framework, an assessment tool was provided for each of the first three tiers in order to assess the newly hired perfusionist's skills. In addition, a training manual was created to review the products used for ECMO at SLMC as well as institution policies and procedures. By having a training program in place, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center will be one step closer to being eligible to apply for the Center of Excellence Award.
