Introduction -- Current teachings: role of customer versus technology -- Why innovate -- Advantages of small companies in innovating -- Organizational structure -- Improved access to technology -- More empowered and active employees -- Better and focused reward systems -- Improved access and contact with the customer -- Improved systems, speed in developing new products -- Conclusions and recommendations.
This thesis is a study of innovation. The initial focus is on striking a balance between the popular teaching to only create what the customer wants, and the historic perspectives. These perspectives indicate that breakthrough innovation is driven by individuals using their understanding of technology. It explains why innovation is critical to a company.
An examination of the advantages that smaller companies have in innovating, leads to recommendations on actions that larger companies can use to improve the process of innovating.
The actions: structuring the organization, accessing technology, empowering employees, rewarding actions, keeping focus on innovation, improving contacts with customers, and developing internal systems used to control innovation are discussed at length.
The document presents recommendations for corporations in each area of action. It also provides guidance to individuals who wish to promote innovation in their own environment.
The study is based both on extensive research and on 25 years of experience in guiding and directing innovation, working within an organization and with suppliers and customers.
