Engineering Professional Development is one of the most valuable tools that an engineering manager can utilize. Surprisingly, though, there is a paucity of literature devoted to this topic. Resources abound for job seekers, educators and human resource professionals. Yet, there appear to be no materials available to demonstrate how an engineering manager can use engineering professional development to answer strategic needs within his organization. Consequently, this thesis is an original composition which illustrates how an engineering organization should go about determining its distinctive competency, or that which it does exceptionally well. Once this focal point or mission is established, activities within the organization can be monitored to ensure that they support this mission. From a human resources standpoint, the engineering manager can evaluate professional development tools like continuing education, technical society participation and intrapreneurship to ensure that these tools are developing human resources capable of supporting the company’s mission, capitalizing on market opportunities and countering competitive threats.
