Contents:
Introduction -- Framework for decision support systems -- Decision support system : what is it ? -- Toward a successful implementation -- Practicality and profitability of DSS.
This thesis is about an area called Decision Support Systems (DSS), that is, supporting the decision process of managers with flexible access to models and relevant information. This approach focuses on an analysis of the key decisions and then the provision of support to managers in making these decisions. This support is possible in complex, unstructured, problem situations and can be used by the manager in conjunction with his intuitive “feel” for the problem and its solution. Since DSS approaches are new, there are still obstacles to their use. While a few of the problems are associated with the growing pains of the state-of-the-art, the more challenging and fundamental ones deal with the inertia of change in general. All of these problems can be overcome by effective planning, coordination and control.
