Mannerisms, lifestyles, sociability and values are unique to each individual, and it has been established that this combination of traits can influence one's occupational choice as well as the level of satisfaction they obtain from that occupation. Perfusion is a highly specialized field where practitioners function within the cardiac operating room to maintain the life of the patient during surgery. Incoming students often have little exposure to the setting, which makes predicting their success in the profession a difficult task. This project seeks to identify personality characteristics of successful perfusionists in an effort to better review applicants for entry into perfusion programs. If successful, this could reduce the number of students that leave perfusion education programs by not admitting those with a personality trait profile that predicts non-completion.
This pilot study surveyed a group of 20 perfusionists, 9 perfusion students, and 2 former perfusion students. Using the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) public domain, a Google form was created. There were 120 questions, 24 questions regarding each of the "big five" traits: neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.
Results of this pilot study found that there were no significant personality trait distinctions between the former students and the rest of those surveyed. As a group, perfusionists scored lowest on neuroticism and highest on conscientiousness, both significantly different from the normative population mean. Results indicate that perfusionists as a group share personality traits, which were also shared by the two former students. Predicting success in perfusion school may not be possible with a personality test; however, a shared perfusion profile is potentially present.
