With the advancement of technologies in cardiovascular surgery, the role of the perfusionist is constantly evolving. Perfusionists historically operated the heart-lung (i.e., bypass) machine, but now may also be responsible for ancillary services such as the operation of intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), extra-corporeal membrane oxygenators (ECMO), and ventricular assist devices (VADs). Because these services are becoming more commonplace in perfusion, perfusion education programs are required to survey their graduates, and the employers of their graduates, about the knowledge and ability that the graduates have in these areas. Surveys of Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Master of Science in Perfusion (MSP) graduates and their employers indicate that some graduates do not seem as comfortable with this equipment as they would like. The goal of this project was to re-examine the current training and assessment of competency of ancillary perfusion services in the MSOE MSP program and make recommendations for improvement where needed.
Graduate and employer comments from the past several years were reviewed in order to identify perceived weaknesses of the program. Then, a thorough review of the curriculum and the assessment tools used was carried out. Curriculum was reviewed for opportunities to add more exposures to topics, while the assessment forms were compared against best practices in medical education. Recommendations were formulated to pass along to the program.
A review of the current MSOE curriculum found that exposure to the ancillary services is limited and that the assessment forms could use some improvement. It was recommended that the MSP program incorporate new objective-based competency assessments and simulation training to improve the ancillary perfusion training and curriculum. Incorporating these new competency assessments and simulation training will allow for improvements and growth of ancillary training and education at MSOE.
