New perfusion students commonly learn complex tasks by watching a certified clinical perfusionist performing a live demonstration. While this method works, it leaves something to be desired. Students can often be overwhelmed by the vast amount of information, and instructors can be frustrated with multiple explanations of the same material. Fortunately, technical advancements permit the use of more modern teaching techniques. One of these techniques is to augment the learning of complex tasks through the use of instructional video.
Instructional video has been around since at least the 1950's, and may be a useful tool in teaching new perfusion students. Because video can be edited, it can provide a near perfect demonstration for students to learn from. In addition, students can refer back to it whenever a question arises. For these reasons, the goal of this project was to create a series of instructional videos for new perfusion students. The videos were recorded, edited, and posted to a popular online video site for easy access and distribution to students and perfusionists. A survey was created, and feedback about the quality and usefulness of the videos was generated.
The survey data and responses from perfusionists and perfusion students showed that the instructional videos would be very useful learning tools for new perfusion students. The use of these videos should result in a faster and less frustrating learning process for both perfusion students and their instructors. Furthermore, existing perfusion students can improve upon the current set of videos, benefitting themselves and future students.
